Jessica C. Ramella-Roman - The PI

Jessica C. Ramella-Roman received an Electrical Engineering degree (Laurea) from the University of Pavia in Italy in 1993 and a Master and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Oregon Health Science University in Portland, Oregon in 2004. She was a Post Doctoral Fellow at the Applied Physics Laboratory of the Johns Hopkins University before joining The Catholic University of America as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering in 2006.
Her current research interests include polarized light imaging and modeling, the use of spectroscopic methodologies for measurements of skin and retinal oxygenation, and the design of fiber-optic probes for biomedical applications.

Paul Lemaillet - PostDoc

Paul Lemaillet received his Ph.D degree in optics from the University of Brest (France) in 2007. His research was related to polarization studies and non-linear optics. Within the scope of his thesis, he developed a polarimeter designed for Hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements. Paul started a post-doc in bio-optics in 2008, his research deals with oximetry of the retina.

Ali Basiri - Graduate student

Ali Basiri graduated from the Electrical Engineering department of Shahid Beheshti University in Iran, 2006. His BS thesis topic was calculating the Electromagnetic Field around the Stator of a Motor Using Constant Current Using the Finite Element Method. He received his master degree in Electrical Engineering 2008 from The Catholic University of America. His research was related to satellite communication: Investigation of Interferences in satellite communication by using Sub-beam approach. Ali started his PhD under the supervision of Dr. Ramella-Roman in 2008. His current research topics includes: oximetry of the retina and new methods for assessment of blood perfusion and oxigenation in the skin.

Thu Anne Nguyen - Graduate student

Thu has joined the CUA biophotonics lab in summer 2009 and is currently working on the develpment of a shock model for electrial burns assessment.

Alumni

Afshin Nabili received a bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering from The Catholic University of America in 2007 and completed a Master degree in Biomedical Engineering in January of 2009.

Marjan Nabili received a bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering from University of Maryland and garduated with a Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2009. During her thesis Marjan worked on the development of a new imaging methods for skin health assessment.

Allison L. Pfeffer, has worked in the biomedical engineering department office for 2 years. Between her sophomore and junior years, she participated in the Summer Internship in Neural Engineering at Northwestern University, affiliated with the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, working under Dr. Mohsen Makhsous. Soft-Tissue Stiffness Alteration in Denervated and Wounded Human Tissue was the topic she presented at the end of the program. Allison worked on the Autonomic Dysreflexia study, studying and experimenting with fiber-optics, as well as learning a great deal about various light-based topics. Allison has graduated and is now designing software applications for the DOD.

Priya Kandimalla received a Master degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2007.
