Society for the Propagation of the Music of the Chemist-Composers

An informal association of those devoted to propagating the music of chemist-composers whose membership includes Chemist-Composers, Chemist-Performers: professionals and amateurs, Chemist-Listeners, Non-Chemist-Performers: professionals and amateurs, and Non-Chemist-Listeners.

The biochemist-composer, Elaine L. Bearer, was born on April 1. Among her musical pieces is her four-movement work, The Nicholls Trio: A Musical Biography of a Scientist, based on the scientific work of her mentor, John Nicholls. The final movement was inspired by electrical patterns in the neurons of leeches, which Nicholls studied.  This is available from Albany Records, Troy 189, P.O. Box 5011, Albany, New York 12205, (518) 453 – 2205.  At Brown University, she is a professor in both the music and medical school.  She does research in molecular biology of actin-cytoskeleton to investigate dynamic cellular behavior. She is a member of a group of health professionals, friends, and students who are providing direct medical care in the outlying districts of San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala.  More information about her music may be found at http://biomed.brown.edu/Faculty/B/bearer/music.html.

One of our members, chemist-performers Joana Ciurash, wishes to have a recital of opera or classical music with all the chemists-singers and include works of chemist-composers.   It could be held in conjunction with an ACS national meeting. If you are interested in participing or assisting, please contact her at jciurash@collegeofthedesert.edu.

.         The membership of SPMCC is now 23 from Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Spain, Sweden, UK, and USA. Members include two chemist-composers, seven chemist-performers, thirteen chemist-listeners, and one non chemist-performer.  There are thirteen Volunteers who send announcement of the anniversaries of chemist-composers to local classical radio stations including 2 non- members.  I am still hoping one day to present the music of the chemist-composers in a CD.

Do you have a friend or fellow chemist who might be interested to join the SPMCC (fee-just enjoyment of classical music)?  Please have your friend complete the answer form below and return it to may@cua.edu:
