Advice for becoming a part of the profession:

• Subscribe to the SLIS Student Listserv -this will get you plugged into all the latest news from the school.



• Start browsing job ads. Take note of what libraries are asking for in the ads you find interesting. Think about what courses will help prepare you for a job you really want. Online postings are available at:
  
  • Library Job Postings on the Internet
  • Lisjobs.com- also has information on interviewing and salaries.
  • Virginia Library Association's Jobline- lists library openings in the state of Virginia
  • iSchool @ Drexel- many of the posted ads are located within the DC area.
  • CUA Career Office– maintained by CUA Office of Career Services
  • LIS-JOBS list– job postings sent to SLIS.

• Talk with people within the field. They are generally more than happy to talk with students who show a genuine interest in their job and the steps that took to get there:
  • People holding jobs you'd like to have
  • other members of the faculty
  • folks that you meet at professional meetings, etc.
