During the Fall 2006 semester, I included standards lectures in a freshmen introduction to engineering course and in a senior seminar course ENGR 401.
Lecture on standards - Students were given the assignment to complete one of the two courses on "standardslearn.org."
Don Purcell, President of the Center for Global Standards Analysis gave at lecture on intellectual property which included intellectual proeperty aspects of standards.
Lecture on Design Constraints - The ABET Engineering Criteria require students to use appropriate engineering standards in their culminating design experience (Criterion 4). Criterion 3 (d) requires that students consider appropriate constraints many of which have standards aspects. This was the basis of this lecture and the accompanying assignment.
Lecture on Management System Standards - the idea here was to introduce this important topic and to provide a context for students to work with the ISO 9000 standards which were provided through the ANSI University outreach program.
Lecture on ISO 9001 - the idea here was to have students work with these standards.
Some links to help students research standards. CUA has programs in biomedical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering so the standards links are limited to these fields.
I made two assignments one to introduce students to standards in general and one specifically for them to search for standards related to the ABET constraints relative to their fields. No assignment was made specific to management standards and ISO 9001 and assignments for these topics are needed.
