The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 1974, directed by Tobe Hooper. It has spawned three sequels and two remakes.
Halloween, 1978, directed by John Carpenter, earliest of the slasher movie series, with several sequels. A main character in the original Halloween is named Dr. Sam Loomis after a character in Hitchcock's Psycho.
