First Hitchcock essay
due Wednesday, February 14, 2007: 4:10 pm
Friday, February 16, 10:10 am
The first essay for MDIA 451/ENG 451 is a short analytical essay on a topic comparing Shadow of a Doubt and Strangers on a Train. Choose one of these topics:

Family values
Why are psychopaths not detected in society?
Black & white, light and shadow

You may (and should) focus and limit the topic. For example, under the general topic of "the family" you could focus on husbands and wives, or on mothers. Like all good essays, yours should have a thesis and then present arguments and evidence in support of the thesis. The more specifically you refer to the films, the better.

Essays will be a minimum of 1200 words (four FULL typed pages, double spaced with normal font and margins). Expect a lower your grade if your essay is less than the assigned minimum.

Essays are due no later than the beginning of class on Friday, February 16. Late essays receive lowered grades; I do not accept excuses such as broken printers, roommate-deleted files, or dogs eating papers. If you are sick or otherwise do not come to class, you must email your essay to me by class time.

You will submit a printout to me at class. However, you must also send me your essay in digital form, with the text pasted into the body of an email. (You can attach the essay to your email, but also copy and paste it into the body of the email; that way I can read it even if I can't open the attachment.) Emailed texts are due at the same time as the printout. The emailed text and the paper text should be identical.

Reminders:

Analytical, critical essay with a thesis and support.
Minimum 4 full typed pages / 1200 words.
Submitted on paper and also in computer form pasted into the body of an email sent to me.
Due 4:10 pm Wednesday February 14.10:10 am, Friday February 16.

The penalty for plagiarism of any other form of academic dishonesty is failure for the course.
