Math Placement at CUA

Which test should you take? Here are the possibilities:

1. Your calculus background is little or none

You need to take the online placement test. Go back to the main placement page and continue with "step 3". If you are in the School of Architecture, then please link here.

2. You have previous calculus experience which might be equivalent to a one semester or one year calculus course.

You might be eligible for transfer credit. Find out by contacting the Office of the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences (room 109 McMahon Hall, 202-319-5114). If you are granted transfer credit then you will be able to take the next calculus course in sequence without taking any placement test.

If you are not granted transfer credit, then you can still take a written placement test to see if you can skip Math 111 or Math 121. Contact the Math Department (207 McMahon Hall, 202-319-5221) to find out. We strongly encourage you to do this.

3. You have taken an AP calculus course and taken the AP Calculus Test (either the "AB" or "BC" test).

If you scored a 4 or 5 on the AP test, then you get transfer credit and automatic placement as follows

Notes: You need to apply for graduation credit based on your AP test score. You can get graduation credit even if you don't take any more calculus at CUA.

Also: If you take a calculus course at CUA which is at or below the level of an AP course you took, then you can't get graduation credit for your AP course.

If you scored below 4 on the AB test (or below 4 on the "AB" portion of the BC test), then you still may be eligible for placement into Math 122 by taking a written placement test. Contact the Math Department (207 McMahon Hall, 202-319-5221) about this possibility.
